Roblox Account Security: 2-Step Verification for Kids’ Accounts
TL;DR, bestie
Turn on 2-Step Verification (2SV) on your kid’s Roblox account:
- Make sure the account has a verified email, ideally yours.
- Go to Settings → Security.
- Turn on Authenticator App (best) or Email.
- Generate backup codes and keep them somewhere safe.
After that, a stolen password isn’t enough to get in. And nobody legit ever asks for a 2SV code.

Account theft is the scam behind most of the other scams: get in, trade everything away, leave a kid in tears. 2-Step Verification is the single best fix, and it takes about five minutes. Here’s how to set it up for a kid’s account so you stay in control.

The 2SV methods, compared
You can only have one 2SV method active at a time, plus security keys on top of an authenticator.
| Method | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Authenticator app | A 6-digit code from an app (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Duo, Authy) | The strongest everyday option. Put it on your phone for a young kid’s account |
| A code is emailed at each password login | Easiest. Use your email so codes come to you | |
| Security keys | A physical key (e.g. YubiKey) or device biometrics | Extra layer. Needs the authenticator app turned on too |
| Second device prompt | Approve or deny the login on a phone that’s already logged in | Can appear at login. Shows device, location and time |
Step-by-step setup
- Add and verify an email. You can’t turn on 2SV without one. Go to Settings → Account Info and add your email for younger kids, then click the link in the verification email.
- Go to Settings → Security. That’s the gear icon on desktop, or More → Settings on mobile.
- Turn on the toggle for Authenticator App or Email, and follow the steps. For the app, scan the QR code with the authenticator on your phone and enter the code it shows.
- Generate backup codes: under recovery codes on the Security tab, select Generate and enter the password. Save them now, because they’re shown only once.
Each backup code works once. Generating new ones cancels the old set.

Making it work for a family
| Kid’s age | Suggested setup |
|---|---|
| Under 10 | Your email plus 2SV by email, or an authenticator on your phone. You approve every new login |
| 10–13 | Authenticator on your phone or theirs. Backup codes stored by you |
| 13+ | Authenticator on their phone. Teach them the “never share a code” rule. Backup codes in a family password manager |
Store backup codes off the device: printed in a drawer, or in a password manager. Not in a screenshot on the kid’s tablet.
Passkeys
Roblox also supports passkeys, which sign in with the device’s fingerprint, face or PIN instead of a password. Roblox notes that logging in with a passkey bypasses 2SV, because a passkey is already a strong sign-in. It’s worth adding on a device you control.
Scam check
Scam check: the scam that beats 2SV is simply asking for the code. “I’m Roblox staff, read me the code”, “type the code to claim your Robux”, “send me the code so I can add you to the trade”. Roblox staff never ask. Teach it as a hard rule: the code goes in the Roblox login box only, and nowhere else, ever.
Other account-safety basics
2SV works best alongside a few simple habits:
| Habit | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| A unique password | If it’s reused on another site and that site leaks, the Roblox account is next |
| Verified email you control | That’s where recovery and security alerts go |
| No “account sharing” | A friend with the password can turn off 2SV or trade items away |
| Only log in on roblox.com or the official app | Fake login pages are the most common way passwords are stolen |
| No browser extensions or “mod” downloads | Some steal the login cookie, which skips the password entirely |
If you get a login prompt you didn’t start
- Deny it. It means someone may have the password.
- Change the password straight away, from a trusted device.
- On the Security tab, use Log out of all other sessions.
- Turn on 2SV if it wasn’t already on, and regenerate backup codes.
Can’t log in after turning it on?
- Use another method: “Email me a code” or a backup code.
- Check your spam folder for email codes.
- Lost everything? Contact Roblox Support. Having a verified email and backup codes makes recovery far easier.
Kiko’s take: If you only do one security thing this week, do this one. Turn on 2SV with your own phone or email as the gatekeeper, print the backup codes, and teach the “never share a code” rule. It’s the digital version of not leaving the house key under the mat, which, yes, my family absolutely did in 1999.
FAQ
Does my child need a phone for 2SV?
No. Use email 2SV or an authenticator app on your phone.
What if we lose the backup codes?
Generate new ones on the Security tab. The old ones stop working.
Can a hacker get past 2SV?
Not with just the password. They’d need the code, which is why scammers try to talk kids into sharing it.
Is email or the app better?
The authenticator app is stronger. Email is easier. Either is far better than nothing.
