The Deer in 99 Nights in the Forest: Behavior, Drops and How to Survive

TL;DR, bestie

  • The Deer is 99 Nights’ main monster. It hunts players outside the Campfire’s safe zone at night.
  • It can’t be killed and has no drops. Weapons do nothing.
  • Your tools: the Campfire (it won’t enter the safe zone while the fire burns) and a Flashlight, which stuns it for a moment. Each stun wears off faster.
  • “The Deer is hungry tonight” means faster, harder hits and red eyes. Get home early.
  • Night 1 is safe. It gets more active and more dangerous as the days climb.

Every 99 Nights run is really a 99-night argument with one very large, very rude deer. It kidnapped the four kids, the Cultists worship it, and it’s the reason you sprint back to camp at dusk. Here’s how it behaves, what it does and doesn’t drop, and how to keep it from ending your run.

Does the Deer drop anything?

No. Because it can’t be killed, it doesn’t drop pelts, meat or loot. If someone says they farmed “Deer antlers” or “Deer meat”, they’ve mixed it up with another animal or they’re winding you up. The real reward for dealing with the Deer is simply surviving the night.

How the Deer behaves

  • Night spawns: each night it has a chance to spawn near a player. Being attacked by another animal or stepping in a trap makes that more likely.
  • Straight-line hunter: once it spawns, it heads for the nearest player. Its pathfinding is clumsy, which is your biggest advantage.
  • Speeds up: you can outrun it at first, but the longer the chase, the faster it gets.
  • Respects the fire: it won’t come into the Campfire’s safe zone while the fire is lit. If you run into camp mid-chase, it gets stunned and runs off.
  • Swapped out sometimes: on maps with a Snow, Volcanic or Jungle biome, the Owl, Ram or Cat can take its place on some nights from night 5. They don’t hunt at the same time.
  • Raid nights: during Cultist raids it stands near the Campfire instead of hunting elsewhere, and walking towards it scares it off.

The hungry Deer

Some nights the game warns you: “The Deer is hungry tonight.” A second warning appears before dark. A hungry Deer is faster, hits harder and has glowing red eyes. It also turns hungry instantly if your Campfire goes out, and it can then spawn right next to the dead fire.

How to survive the Deer

  1. Gather on Day 1. The first night is calm, so stock up on wood while it’s safe.
  2. Be back before dark, and much earlier on hungry nights. Getting caught deep in the forest is how most runs end.
  3. Always carry a Flashlight. Shine it on the Deer to stun it, then run. Don’t keep stunning it in place, because it recovers faster every time.
  4. Use obstacles. Big trees and buildings break its line, thanks to its poor pathfinding.
  5. Know the safe perches. Players report being safe halfway up a ladder (Water Tower, Treehouse or Tool Workshop), inside the Caverns, or in the empty crate in a Barn.
  6. Never let the fire die. Keep spare fuel at camp for rainy nights.
  7. Speed classes help. Several classes have speed boosts that can outrun a normal (not hungry) Deer.

Has the Deer ever been friendly?

Yes, briefly. In the late-2025 “The Deer is HURT” update, players could bandage and feed an injured Deer, help it get revenge on the Bat, and it then fought Cultists for a couple of raids. A Thanksgiving update also let players win it over by cooking every dish. Those events ended, and the Deer went back to hunting players.

Kiko’s take: The Deer is honestly a great video game monster: big, dumb, unbeatable and surprisingly easy to dodge once you respect the rules. Light on, fire fed, home by dusk. It’s like the Y2K bug, really. Totally fine if you prepare, and a full meltdown if you don’t.
