99 Nights Food Guide: Stew, Farm Plots and Never Starving Again

TL;DR, bestie

  • Early game: cook Morsels and Steak at the Campfire (raw meat hurts you) and snack on Berries and Carrots.
  • Mid game: build Farm Plots (Crafting Bench Tier 2). Each grows 6 crops every 2 days: mostly Carrots, sometimes Corn, Pumpkins or even Cake.
  • Long game: a Crock Pot (Bench Tier 3) turns any 3 foods into a Stew, which restores about half your hunger and keeps you warm.
  • Best combo: Farm Plots feeding a Crock Pot. Put Carrots in the pot and eat Pumpkins whole, because a Pumpkin alone already restores 50%.

Starving in 99 Nights is the most avoidable way to lose a run, and it still happens all the time, usually while everyone is busy fighting wolves. The fix is a simple food chain: hunt early, farm in the middle, stew forever. Here’s how it works, with the hunger values from the community wiki.

How hunger works

Your hunger bar sits on the left of the screen and drains all the time. It drains faster when you sprint. If it empties, you start starving. Standing still, a full bar lasts about 12 minutes 40 seconds. A few classes and blessings slow the drain, but everyone needs a steady food supply.

These numbers are maintained by players on the wiki, not published by the developers, so treat them as close rather than exact.

Stage 1: hunting and cooking (nights 1–5)

  • Cook everything at the Campfire. Raw Morsels, Steak and Ribs damage you and give less hunger.
  • Hunt Bunnies early. They’re easy Morsels, and a Bunny Foot is something the Pelt Trader wants on Day 2.
  • Bunny Traps (Bench Tier 1, up to 10) give a trickle of extra Morsels. Bait them with Carrots, Corn or Pumpkins.
  • Grab Berries and Carrots whenever you walk past them. They’re small but free.

Stage 2: Farm Plots (mid game)

Once your Crafting Bench reaches Tier 2, build Farm Plots. They cost wood, and you can have up to 20. Unlike most crafted items, you can place them anywhere.

Build them close to camp so harvesting doesn’t mean a dangerous trip at dusk. Players also stack plots on top of each other to save space.

Stage 3: the Crock Pot and Stew (late game)

At Crafting Bench Tier 3, you unlock the Crock Pot. Drop in 3 foods and it cooks a Stew. Stews restore about 50% hunger, warm you when you’re cold, and can be carried in your inventory, so they’re ideal for long trips and raid nights.

What can go in: Carrots, Corn, Pumpkins, Apples, Morsels, Steak, Ribs and Cake. What can’t: Berries, Strawberries and Chilies.

The smart stew math

A single Pumpkin already restores 50%, the same as a Stew. So putting Pumpkins in the pot is a waste. Three Carrots (5% each when eaten raw) become a 50% Stew, which is a massive upgrade. Stew your small foods and eat your big foods whole.

A food routine that just works

  1. Day 1–3: hunt and cook meat, and pick up every Carrot and Berry.
  2. Bench Tier 2: build 4–6 Farm Plots right away, then add more as wood allows.
  3. Bench Tier 3: build a Crock Pot next to the farm and turn every Carrot into Stew.
  4. Keep a stack of Stews in a chest at camp for raids, rainy nights and long rescue trips.
  5. One player on “kitchen duty” (often a support class like the Medic) keeps the whole team fed.

Kiko’s take: Farm Plots plus a Crock Pot is the most satisfying loop in the game. It’s basically a Tamagotchi in reverse: for once, you’re the one being fed on schedule. Get your farm going by mid game and hunger stops being a thing you think about.
