Is Murder Mystery 2 Appropriate for Kids? A Parent’s Honest Take

TL;DR, bestie

  • MM2 is rated “Moderate” on Roblox, for light blood and repeated moderate violence. It’s cartoony knife-and-gun hide-and-seek, but it is about a murderer.
  • The bigger risks aren’t the knives: trading scams, strangers in chat, and Robux spending on boxes, gamepasses and event passes.
  • For most kids around 9+ who are fine with cartoon violence, it’s OK with Parental Controls set up.
  • Younger or sensitive kids may find the theme scary.

Parent hat on. Murder Mystery 2 has “murder” right there in the name, which understandably makes parents twitch. In practice it’s a fast, cartoony game of hide-and-seek with a twist. Here’s what your kid actually sees, the real risks (spoiler: mostly trading), and how to set it up safely.

What happens in MM2

Each round, players are secretly given a role:

  • Murderer: tries to eliminate everyone with a knife (stabbing or throwing).
  • Sheriff: tries to find and shoot the Murderer.
  • Innocents: run, hide, collect coins and help find the Murderer.

Rounds last a few minutes. When a player is eliminated, they’re out until the next round. It’s a social deduction game, a bit like the party game “Wink Murder” with Roblox avatars.

The content rating

At the time of checking, Roblox labels MM2:

LabelDetail
MaturityModerate
BloodLight, realistic
ViolenceRepeated, moderate

In plain terms: blocky avatars get stabbed or shot and fall over. Some cosmetic “effects” add flair, but it’s not gory. The tension comes from the theme, being hunted, more than from anything graphic.

Can I block it? Yes. Roblox Parental Controls let you limit experiences by maturity label. Set it to “Mild” and MM2 won’t be available. See my Roblox parental controls guide.

The real risks

1. Trading scams

MM2 has one of Roblox’s biggest trading economies. Rare knives and guns can be “worth” a lot to kids, and scammers know it. Common tricks are “trust trades” (you give first, they leave), fake value lists and “free godly” sites that steal passwords.

2. Chat and strangers

MM2 uses Roblox chat. Rounds include lots of quick “who’s the murderer?!” banter, plus some trash talk. Use Roblox’s chat controls to limit or turn off chat, especially for younger kids.

3. Spending

Robux can buy gamepasses (like Elite, which raises coin limits and XP), boxes and event battle passes. Crate openings are random, a bit like loot boxes.

Scam check

Scam check: no site, YouTuber or player can give “free godlies” or “free Robux”. Anyone asking for a password is a scammer. And in trades, never go first. MM2 trades can’t be undone.

Age guide (my honest take)

AgeSuggestion
Under 7Probably skip. The theme can be scary
7–9Watch a few rounds together first. Chat off, spending 0
9–12Usually fine with Parental Controls on. Talk about trading scams
13+Fine for most. Keep the scam chat going

Every kid is different. If yours gets nightmares from Scooby-Doo villains, wait a bit.

Setting it up: a five-minute checklist

  1. Check their account birthday is correct.
  2. Link your parent account in Roblox.
  3. Set the maturity limit (Mild blocks MM2, Moderate allows it).
  4. Set chat to your comfort level.
  5. Set a spending limit and turn on 2-step verification.

Signs to check in

Keep an eye out for:

  • Big emotions about a trade. Upset after “losing” a knife often means a scam. Help them report and block, and reassure them.
  • Requests for Robux “for a box” right after a new event launches. Event hype is real, so agree a budget up front.
  • New “friends” asking to move to another app (Discord, Snapchat and so on). That’s a conversation to have straight away.
  • Late-night “one more round”. Quick rounds make it easy to lose track of time, so a timer helps.

Good things about MM2

  • Quick rounds, easy to stop (“one more round, then dinner” actually works).
  • Deduction and observation skills. Kids get surprisingly good at reading behavior.
  • Plays well with friends in the same server.
  • Lots of creativity in trading and collecting, which can teach real lessons about value, patience and saying no to a bad deal.

Kiko’s take: As a kid who watched way too much Scooby-Doo in the 90s, I’d put MM2 in the same box: spooky-silly, more tension than terror. The knives are cartoony, and the real danger is a dodgy trade. Set the controls, have the “never go first” chat, and you’ve handled 90% of it.

FAQ

Is Murder Mystery 2 appropriate for a 9-year-old?

For many 9-year-olds, yes, with chat limited and a spending limit set. It’s rated Moderate for light blood and violence.

Can I block MM2 on my kid’s Roblox?

Yes. Set the maturity limit to Mild in Parental Controls, or block the specific experience.

Does MM2 have chat?

Yes, through Roblox chat, which you can limit or turn off.

Is MM2 gambling?

Crates give random items and can be bought with Robux. A spending limit stops real-money crate buying.

What’s the Disguises mode?

A variant where everyone looks the same and has a code name, so you have to work out the Murderer from behavior. Same rating, same content. It’s just harder.
