Hard Mode in 99 Nights: Corruption, Rifts and Better Diamond Rewards
TL;DR, bestie
- Hard Mode (added January 2026) adds corruption, rifts and meaner cultist pressure.
- Vote it on in the lobby; it kicks in after the first night once enough players agree.
- Hitting day 45 pays 4 diamonds (vs 2). Hitting day 99 pays 8 (vs 3).
- Unchecked rifts push corruption toward 100% in roughly 3.5 in-game days.
Normal 99 Nights already wants you dead. Hard Mode is the version that also paints the sky purple and opens holes in reality. I only queue it with people who will actually close rifts.

How it works
After the vote passes, a short cutscene shows containment failing. The day flashes purple, the first rift opens, and the Research Outpost keeps a purple aura with lightning for the rest of the run. Cultist attacks spawn more enemies at every corruption level. At 15% corruption the Deer is hungry every night. Higher brackets pile on nastier world effects — close rifts or watch the meter climb.

Rifts left alone can shove corruption from 0% toward 100% in about 3.5 days (around 15 real minutes). Corruption also creeps up about 1% per day on its own, capping that passive climb around 20%. Bring a Corruption Scanner from the Research Outpost chests so someone can track the nearest rift.
Step by step
- In the lobby, toggle Hard Mode on and get the votes you need for your party size.
- Survive night 1. Cutscene plays; first rift opens.
- Loot the Research Outpost chests once corruption starts: Research Monitor blueprint, Corruption Scanner, MREs, medkit, bandages. Most of those chests are once-per-game.
- Assign someone to hunt rifts while others keep the campfire and food stable.
- Ride the bigger diamond payouts at day 45 and day 99 if the squad holds.

Tips
- MREs are stews that don't rot. Save them for panic nights.
- Place the Research Monitor near camp so everyone sees corruption status.
- More cultists means more ammo and healing demand — craft early.
- Solo Hard Mode is legal and spicy. Bring a class that can self-sufficient food and fight.
Common mistakes
- Voting yes and then ignoring rifts "for a bit."
- Treating Research chests like normal per-player chests.
- Expecting the usual on-screen "Deer is hungry" warning every night — Hard Mode skips some of those.
- Queuing with randoms who mute and wander. Corruption is a team chore.
Kiko's take: Hard Mode is worth it for the diamond bump if the lobby will close rifts. If half the party is sightseeing, stay on normal and keep your sanity.

Party size and vote math
Bring the vote sheet to voice chat: five players need three yes votes, four need three, three need two, duos need both, solo is automatic if you toggle it. Nothing feels worse than two people voting yes, two ignoring the prompt, and one AFK while the lobby clocks out.
Once Hard Mode is on, call rift duty out loud. The Corruption Scanner exists so one person can be the designated hole-closer while someone else babysits hunger and the campfire. Silent lobbies fail Hard Mode more than under-geared lobbies.
If your goal is diamonds, plan the day-45 and day-99 checkpoints like raid bosses. Don't invent busywork on day 40 that burns medkits you'll want on day 70.
FAQ
When does Hard Mode start after the vote? After the first night. Then the cutscene and first rift hit.
Are the diamond rewards better? Yes. 4 at day 45 and 8 at day 99, versus 2 and 3 on normal.
Can I turn Hard Mode off mid-run? Plan around the lobby vote. Once corruption is rolling, you're in it.
