Campfire in 99 Nights in the Forest: Levels, Fuel and the Safe Zone
TL;DR, bestie
- The Campfire is the heart of every 99 Nights in the Forest run. It creates a safe zone that scares off the Deer, the Ram, the Owl and wild animals. Cultists can still walk in.
- It’s always burning down. Feed it logs, coal, fuel canisters, biofuel or oil barrels to keep it going and to level it up from 1 to 6.
- Every level expands the map and the safe zone. Level 6 burns slower and holds up better in rain and snow.
- If it goes out, you’re no longer safe: the Deer is guaranteed to come hungry, the map stops working and you lose health regeneration. Relighting it fixes everything right away.

You can lose a lot of things in 99 Nights and recover. The campfire isn’t one of them. It’s your safe zone, your stove, your flashlight charger and the thing that decides how much of the forest you can even explore. This page covers how it works, what each level gives you and what happens when someone forgets to feed it.

How it works
The fuel bar
The fire burns down constantly, and faster during rain and blizzards. Drop fuel onto it to refill the bar. Fill the bar all the way and the fire levels up. Bigger parties need more fuel to level it, so a full server burns through supplies quickly.
Levels
Each level makes the fire look bigger, and it also makes the explorable map bigger and the safe zone wider. That’s the real reason to level it. Higher levels also handle weather better, and Level 6 depletes slower and shrugs off rain and snow much better than the early levels. There are badges, Firemaking I through IV, for reaching levels 3 to 6.

Fuel amounts per level vary with party size, so I won’t pin exact numbers. In general, logs are fine for the first couple of levels, but past around Level 4 they barely move the bar. Coal, fuel canisters, biofuel and oil barrels do the heavy lifting late in the run.
The safe zone
Inside the safe zone, the Deer, the Ram, the Owl and regular wild animals back off. Attack an animal while you’re inside, though, and it will come in after you. Cultists ignore the safe zone entirely, so you still need defenses. The safe zone also boosts health regeneration, improves visibility and removes the freezing debuff from snow and blizzards.
When the fire goes out
You’ll see the message “The campfire has gone out, you are no longer safe,” and things go bad fast:
- The Deer is guaranteed to spawn, and it’s always the Hungry Deer (except on night one).
- The safe zone is gone, so enemies can walk right into camp.
- Natural health regeneration stops.
- The Map stops working, and the campfire icon disappears from your screen.
- You can’t cook or recharge flashlights on cold ashes.
The moment it’s relit, every penalty switches off, and the Deer gets scared back out.

Step by step: keeping the fire healthy
- Light it on day one with a log.
- Assign one person to keep an eye on the bar, especially at night.
- Level it early with logs while logs still count.
- Switch to coal, canisters and biofuel once you’re past the mid levels.
- Craft Torches at the Tier 3 bench to widen the safe radius for free.
- Keep a fuel reserve. A couple of canisters stashed nearby can relight the fire instantly if it goes out.
Tips
- Rain and blizzards drain the fire faster, so top it up before the weather hits.
- Past the mid levels, put logs into crafting instead of the fire.
- An Oil Drill makes the push to Level 6 much easier.
- You can unlock Flames (special fire looks like Blue Hot, Alien, Frog, Meteor and Carnival) from Daily Quests and equip them through the Supply Crate. They’re cosmetic, but very cute.
Common mistakes
- Everyone going exploring and nobody watching the fire.
- Fighting animals inside the safe zone, which invites them in.
- Assuming the safe zone stops Cultists.
- Dumping every log into a high-level fire when it barely helps.
Kiko’s take: The campfire is a group project, and every group has one player who forgets it exists. Don’t be that player. If I’m walking past camp, I drop something on the fire, every single time. It’s the cheapest insurance in the game, and a Hungry Deer at 2 a.m. in-game is a very expensive lesson.
