Players call it the "ninja wolf" because it finds you from far away and usually brings friends.

When and where Alphas spawn
- The Forest: once your campfire hits Level 3.
- Other biomes: campfire Level 3+ and only at night.
- Locked Cave #2: 4 Alpha guards around the Kraken Kid.
- Cultist Hunter Camp: 2 Alphas.
- At night past day 15: they can spawn alongside normal wolves near players who stay outside.
Upgrading the campfire to Level 3 is what turns Alphas on in the forest. Make sure someone in the squad has a real weapon before you do it.

Food-wise, an Alpha drops the same as a Wolf. You fight it for the pelt, the key or the kid, not for extra dinner.
How to fight Alpha Wolves
Melee
- Pull one Alpha at a time if you can. Groups are what kill you.
- Strafe in a circle while you swing, like with normal wolves.
- Use Ctrl camera lock on PC to keep it in front of you.
- Back away and heal between Alphas, not during.
Ranged
- Revolver: 5 body shots or 4 headshots per Alpha. It works, but it's ammo-hungry.
- Rifle: the safer choice if you keep taking hits up close.
- Raygun: Alien class players can chip them down without worrying about ammo.
Clearing the Kraken Kid cave
- 4 Alphas guard it. Bring at least 16 Revolver bullets for headshots, or a stronger gun.
- Fight from the entrance so they can't surround you.
- Grab the Blue Key from the last one before you leave.
How to tame an Alpha Wolf
- Get a Good Taming Flute or better. The Old one won't work.
- Click an Alpha to start the minigame. It stays calm while you play.
- Feed it a Steak, a Mackerel and a Salmon when asked.
- Repeat 4 times. Total: 4 Steak, 4 Mackerel and 4 Salmon.
That's a lot of fish, so team up with a Fisherman if you're serious. More in the taming guide.
Classes that handle Alphas best
- Alien: rechargeable Raygun and great night vision.
- Berserker: huge damage at low HP, but risky against 25-damage bites.
- Hunter: Level 3 needs 120 Alpha kills, so Hunters end up farming them anyway.
- Ranger: fine for the cave with good aim, weaker later.
Common mistakes
- Upgrading to campfire Level 3 with only Old Axes in the squad.
- Fighting a group of 3 in the open.
- Looting outside at night past day 15, then getting jumped by a pack.
- Bringing an Old Taming Flute to tame one.
Alphas are the game's "okay, playtime's over" moment. Fight them one at a time, near your light, with a real weapon, and they're very doable. Fight three in the dark and you'll be back in the lobby.
