The Wolf is the first real threat in 99 Nights in the Forest. It's not scary on its own. It's scary when three of them find you at night carrying an armful of logs.
Learn wolves well and the early game gets a lot calmer, plus they're your main source of Steak.

What wolves drop
| Item | Amount | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Morsel | 2–3 | Quick food, cook it first |
| Steak | 1 | Better food, also used for taming |
| Wolf Pelt | 0–1 | Trade at the Pelt Trader |
| Red Key | Last cave guard only | Opens the red-locked areas |
The Hunter class gets more meat from kills, and at Level 3 the Pelt Trader offers it an extra Wolf Pelt trade. If you farm wolves a lot, Hunter is only 40 diamonds.
How wolves behave
- Idle: they wander until you enter their detection radius or hit them.
- Chasing: once they spot you, they chase until you die or get out of range.
- Hit and back off: sometimes a wolf bites, then runs a short distance away before coming back.
- Leashed: if a wolf wanders too far from its spawn, it teleports back in a puff of smoke.
- Respawns: killed wolves can come back after a day.
- Pets: if your tamed pet attacks a wolf, the wolf switches to the pet until you hit it again.
Wolves spawn near players who stay out at night, so AFKing in the woods doesn't work. Night-spawned wolves can't be tamed and they vanish the next day if you don't kill them. Past day 15, Alpha Wolves can join them.

How to kill a wolf
With an axe (early game)
- Let the wolf come to you instead of chasing it.
- Circle around it while you swing. Strafing makes it miss.
- On PC, press Ctrl once to lock your camera so it's easier to keep the wolf in front of you.
- Back off when it backs off, then punish it on the way in.
Even an Old Axe can do it this way. It just takes patience.
With guns and traps
- Revolver: 3 body shots or 2 headshots.
- Bear Trap: 100 damage, which kills a wolf instantly. Traps cost 3 scrap each, so they're pricey early unless you're Hunter (starts with 2).
- Tamed pet: let it pull aggro while you hit from the side.
When not to fight
On days 1–2, chests usually matter more than wolves. Open chests first, upgrade your tools, then come back.
How to tame a wolf
- Get an Old Taming Flute or better.
- Find a wolf that hasn't taken any damage. Hurt wolves can't be tamed.
- Click it to start the taming minigame. The wolf stays calm while you play.
- When it asks, give it a Morsel and a Steak.
- Repeat 3 times. Total cost: 3 Steak and 3 Morsels.
Tamed wolves are good early bodyguards, but they can't damage Mammoths or Hellephants. Read more in my taming guide.

Wolf badges
- Supporting: kill 50 enemies while near a teammate. Reward: 5 diamonds and 3 Blue Flame fires.
- Hunter: get 50 pelt drops from animals. Wolves are the easiest pelts to farm.
Common mistakes
- Chasing wolves into the dark away from the campfire light.
- Hitting a wolf you wanted to tame. One hit and it's no longer tameable.
- Standing still while swinging. Always strafe.
- Hanging around a cabin at night until a pack spawns on you.
Wolves are the game's way of teaching you to move while you fight. Once strafing clicks, they turn from a threat into a Steak delivery service. Respect them at night anyway.
