Ghost Ranger Class in 99 Nights in the Forest: Perks, Cost and Is It Worth It?

TL;DR, bestie

The Ghost Ranger is the new Halloween class in 99 Nights in the Forest. It costs 1,000 Candy in Happy’s Halloween shop in the lobby and starts with the Ghost Crossbow, whose bolts pierce through enemies with unlimited reserve bolts. Level 2 (shoot 100 enemies) gives a 25% chance for enemy projectiles to pass through you, and level 3 (300 enemies) adds one extra bolt per load. My verdict: worth it for solo players who already have the Candy, but not worth a miserable grind. The shop closes Sat 7 Nov: 2:30am PT / 5:30am ET / 10:30am GMT / 9:30pm AEDT / 11:30pm NZDT.

The Hedge Maze Refresh dropped on 31 October with a brand-new class, and the thumbnails are already screaming “BROKEN”. Here’s what the Ghost Ranger actually does, how to level it, how it stacks up against the Witch, and whether I’d spend 1,000 Candy on it.

It’s a separate class from the regular Ranger. Owning or leveling the normal Ranger doesn’t turn it into the Ghost Ranger.

Perks and levels

LevelPerkHow to unlock
1Ghost Crossbow, bolts pierce enemiesBuy the class (1,000 Candy)
225% chance for enemy projectiles to pass through youShoot 100 enemies with the Ghost Crossbow
3One extra ghost bolt before reloadingShoot 300 enemies with the Ghost Crossbow

Only hits with the Ghost Crossbow count, so switching to another weapon for tough fights slows your leveling.

My take on the perks: level 1 is the real selling point. Piercing plus unlimited ammo means you never craft or loot bolts again, which removes one of the most annoying chores in a run. The level 2 perk is nice, but a 25% dodge is a bonus, not a plan. You’ll still get hit by Cultist arrows three times out of four. Level 3’s extra bolt is small, but it’s the difference between finishing a wolf pack and reloading mid-fight.

How I’d level it fast

  1. Line enemies up before you shoot. One bolt through three wolves is three hits towards your level, and that’s how piercing pays off.
  2. Shoot everything early. Bunnies and wolves on day 1 all count towards the 100 and 300 targets.
  3. Reload before you engage, not during. With six bolts per load, I’d rather start a fight full than get caught empty.
  4. Use Cultist Stronghold corridors. Enemies funnel into lines in tight spaces, which is perfect for a piercing weapon.

Ghost Ranger vs Witch: which one?

Both are in Happy’s shop this week, and you probably can’t afford both.

My honest call: if you mostly play solo and want straightforward damage, I’d take the Ghost Ranger. If you play in a team or in Hard Mode, the Witch’s healing is worth more than piercing bolts. The full breakdown of the Witch is in my Witch class guide.

Is the Ghost Ranger “broken”? Hot take

No. It’s strong, but “broken” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in those thumbnails. Here’s my reasoning:

  • Receipts for “strong”: unlimited ammo and piercing are genuinely rare together, and they solve the two biggest problems for ranged players, which are running out of ammo and getting swarmed.
  • Receipts against “broken”: there’s no healing, the 25% dodge is luck-based, and six bolts per load is a modest magazine. It has only been out for a couple of days, so nobody has a full year of testing on it like the Witch.

Give it a few weeks of real community testing before calling it the best class in the game. I’ll update this if the picture changes.

Is it worth 1,000 Candy? What I’d do

  • Yes, if you already have 700+ Candy. You’re a few good farming sessions away, and it’s limited-time to buy.
  • Maybe, if you’re starting from zero. 1,000 Candy in under a week is a big ask. At 8 Candy per full-costume knock, that’s 125 knocks. My Candy farming guide has the fastest route.
  • No, if you’re a brand-new player. A cheap Diamond class from my class tier list will do more for your first 99 nights than a Halloween class you can’t level yet.

One thing I couldn’t confirm: whether the Ghost Ranger stays in your class list after Halloween. Last year’s Witch did, which is a good sign, but I haven’t seen the developers say it for this class.

Kiko’s take: The Ghost Ranger is the “set and forget” pick: point, shoot, never think about ammo again. It’s my favorite solo class of the event, but it isn’t worth stressing over. If you can’t reach 1,000 Candy without hating the game, skip it and take the Witch or a cheap Diamond class instead. FOMO is not a build.

Scam check

Nobody can unlock the Ghost Ranger for you, “add Candy” to your account or sell you an account that has it, and any site promising that is a scam. Candy comes from in-game activities only, and codes go through the game’s own Codes button in the lobby.
